How Often Should You Go to the Dentist?

How often do you go to the dentist? Are you on a regular schedule, or do you only go when you have a toothache? Many people don’t go to the dentist as often as they should. For some it’s due to lack of dental insurance. For others, it’s due to a busy lifestyle and failing to make time for routine dental visits. Whatever the reason, the question remains: how often should you go to the dentist?

Every 6 Months

Dental experts recommend going to the dentist for routine cleanings and exams every 6 months. This is the ideal time frame for the average patient to have plaque removed from their teeth. Even if you brush your teeth twice a day and floss once a day as dentist’s recommend, there may still be some plaque left behind on your teeth. Plaque can cause tooth decay and gum disease if it remains on the teeth for too long. It can also harden into calculus, which is much more difficult to remove. Going to the dentist for preventive care every 6 months removes plaque before it becomes a problem.

What Do Routine Appointments Entail?

A routine dental cleaning and exam typically includes the following:

  • Plaque removal. Plaque will be removed from your teeth using special tools.
  • Flossing. Your teeth will be professionally flossed by your dental hygienist.
  • Teeth polishing. An electric tooth polishing tool is used to smooth the surface of your teeth.
  • Oral exam. A thorough oral exam will be done to check for any health issues, including oral cancer.
  • X-Rays. X-Rays are usually only done once a year, or every other appointment if you’re going on a 6 month schedule.
  • Fluoride treatment. Fluoride treatment is optional, but may be recommended if you are at a high risk of tooth decay.

What Does Dental Insurance Cover?

Most dental insurance plans cover routine cleanings and exams every 6 months. These appointments may be covered in full or you may have a copayment depending on your provider and plan. Dental insurance typically covers X-Rays once a year. When it comes to other restorative procedures like fillings, root canals, and crowns, the amount of coverage depends on your plan. Refer to your insurance provider to determine what dental services your plan covers.

What if I Don’t Have Dental Insurance?

Just because you don’t have dental insurance doesn’t mean you shouldn’t receive quality dental care on a regular schedule. Routine dental cleanings and exams can be very affordable when paid for out of pocket, depending on your dentist’s rates. You also have the option to purchase dental insurance if your employer doesn’t offer it as a benefit.

Another option for higher cost procedures is financing. CareCredit is one option for financing medical costs, including dental. Other financing options may be available through your dental office or your financial institution. Your dental office may also allow you to pay for your care in installments without financing depending on their policy.

Don’t let lack of insurance prevent you from getting the dental care you need. Preventive care can save you money by preventing the need for more expensive dental procedures.
